It's certainly been a while since I picked up D2 properly, and I've become accustomed to PoE's way of linear progression with sockets. By which you have 4+ socket items to play with. of runes some of which you won't find until typically Hell as well. It's the same problem with 2 socket runewords like lore and smoke.which should be simplistic to achieve as it's just a 2 socket requirement. The silliness of needing a monarch for every other class baffles me as well. but not finding one for another 45 levels ( even as a paladin, I had to have it gifted to me from a friend ). 
The start of this ladder in particular has been painful in that regard, having farmed the runes required for a spirit shield.
It makes the 4 socket items.which you needed back at level 25. which amazes me where you basically go from 3 socket items to 6 socket items immediately. And then it stagnates until the start of Hell difficulty. getting the chance at a 4 socket sword ( and nothing else ) by the time you react act 4 normal. Getting a 3 socket item is pretty hassle free by the time you're into act 3 normal and above. Criticism: I'm not very fond of the socketing tables.
